Belize Mission March 2016 – Day 7
- Day 7 started with the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Punta Gorda. Discussion centered on the Resource Centers being opened in 17 schools in Toledo District and the need for incinerators to burn hazardous hospital waste. The current system is unsafe and the PG Club is looking for a solution to replace all the incinerators in the District.
The health issues in Belize are:
- Diabetes
- STDs and HIV
- Cancer and heart disease
- Drug use (mainly alcohol, marijuana and cocaine)
In Belize there if you have cancer you have to leave the country for radiation treatments as there is no in country treatment facility. Ruth stated that their major problem is staff shortages. Cost of treatment at the hospital is minimal or free.
- After we left the hospital we set up the center at Midway… and then it was the two hour drive to the border with Guatemala…
- …where we set up the center in Dolores. Currently there are hostilities between Belize and Guatemala and we had to talk our way through a military blockade to enter the village which is less than 1⁄2 mile to the border.
- Before approaching us the ‘leader’ went into the truck and came back with his semi-automatic rifle.
